The first Now That’s What I Call Music album was released on 28 November 1983, a double vinyl LP with 32 tracks. This original concept was the brainchild of two young men working in the London offices of CBS Records; Simon Draper, who oversaw popular music, and Richard Russell, who oversaw marketing. They pooled their talents, along with those of forty other employees, including Bravado International merchandise who manufactured and distributed the albums worldwide on behalf of EMI and Sony BMG.
The natural successor to existing multi-artist hits compilations such as K-tel, Top of the Pops and Stars on 45, the series had its origins in a one-off triple album compilation called HOT 100 3 In 1 which was compiled by Russell and released in December 1982.
